Assam is the most beautiful gems of Northeast India. Explore a rich, green land of rolling hills, plains and dense forests. The mighty Brahmaputra River that has its origin near Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash, prayed to by four religions of Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bonpas, charts its course through Tibet, Assam and Bangladesh. Assam, the mystic land of blue hills and beautiful rivers, is renowned for its tea, rich flora and fauna.
Embark in this 8-day cruise and marvel at the Kamakhya Temple, venture into the heart of tea-country and explore Majuli Island. Visit Kaziranga National Park which boasts a wide range of easily seen wildlife, the many rhinoceros being the outstanding feature. On the river and its sand islands, one can often see great flocks of migrating waterfowl, and there is also a good chance of seeing the rare Gangetic Dolphin.
This cruise can go downstream or upstream on selected dates 2018-2019.
On arrival at Guwahati Airport, you will be met by a representative of our ground partner Eternal Journeys and transferred to Kamakhya.
Enjoy the visit of the Kamakhya Temple. Nestled on the top of the beautiful Nilachal Hil, Kamakhya Temple complex consists of about 20 temples – the largest and most visited being the temple of Goddess Kamakhya. The Kamakhya temple is one of the oldest and most sacred of the 51 Shakti Pithas.
After the Temple visit, we drive towards Pandu Port where an Assamese welcome aboard the MV Mahabaahu awaits us.
This morning after breakfast, disembark and explore a village on foot to witness the local life in this typical riverside community.
Return back to cruise and continue your way to Tullugaon, a bank side village with large sugarcane plantations.
Start the day with the visit of a Tea plantation. Sri Lanka, Tea and Tourism are words which cannot be separated. Take a tour to the cold & misty hills that take pride of an ultimate tea tour, covering lush green blankets of tea plantations. Or just step into a tea factory processing the prestigious brand of Ceylon Tea, to observe a rich tradition kept alive up to date. As you observe the hissing and swishing of machines, inhaling the heavenly scent arising from these facilities, make sure to end your day in style over a perfectly blended cup of pure Ceylon Tea.
Today you will take an early morning elephant ride through grassland in Kaziranga National Park.
Kaziranga National Park is a protected area in the northeast Indian state of Assam. Spread across the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, its forests, wetlands and grasslands are home to tigers, elephants and the world’s largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses. Ganges River dolphins swim in the park’s waters. It’s visited by many rare migratory birds, and pelicans roost near Kaziranga village.
After breakfast head into the park and enjoy Jeep Safari. Get up close to iconic native species such as tigers, rhinoceros , elephants, Swamp Deer, Wild Buffalo and more.
Later return back and embark the Cruise and sail to Biswanath Ghat.
Upon arrival you will visit the village and the famous Biswanath temple, also known as Gupta Kashi.
This morning disembark at Eastern Range of Kaziranga. You will enjoy a boat safari on Brahmputra River. The shores are high but one can see roof turtles on protruding drift wood, water lizards, otters, elephants, wild buffaloes, rhinos, darters, herons, pied kingfishers, white throated kingfishers, serpent eagles and many more.
Today you will visit Majuli Island. Majuli is the world's largest river island and it attracts tourists from all over the world. Among one of the most surreal places in India, Majuli is also a strong contender for a place in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Mostly inhabited by Tribals, the culture of Majuli is unique and quite interesting and is one of the key reasons why people love this place so much. It is also called the cultural capital of Assam. The festivals celebrated here are all joyous and vibrant. The main festival in the town of Majuli is called Raas and witnessing it is an interesting spectacle.
This morning disembark cruise at Neemati Ghat & start our day-excursion to Sibsagar, the ancient city and capital of the Tai-speaking Ahoms who came in the 13th Century AD to the area from the north-east and were essentially of Tibeto-Burman origin. Sibsagar town literally means 'the ocean of Lord Shiva’ as it is built around a huge man made water tank ordered by the Ahom Queen.
First you will visit Shiva Dol, built in 1734, the highest Shiva temple in India. Continue with the Rang Ghar. It is said to be the oldest amphitheatre in the whole of Asia and has often been referred to as the 'Colosseum of the East'. You will also explore the Talatal Ghar, previous palace of the Kings of the Ahom Kingdom. This monument was built with baked bricks, with a mortar of rice, eggs and grains which forms a sticky material and known to be very hard.
Disembark and depart, with a transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
