At 4095 metres above sea level, Mt Kinabalu is the highest peak in Malaysia and all of Southeast Asia. This trek will have you summiting the mountain before dawn, hiking through the dense rainforest that gradually thins out as you reach, and then pass the tree line. No mountaineering experience or equipment is necessary on what is a manageable ascent, coupled with ropes and ladders on some of the steeper final sections. Climb to the top of Lows Peak before dawn to witness the breathtaking spectacle of the sun rising over Borneo.
Your guide will pick you up at your hotel in Kota Kinabalu this morning for the drive along Sabah's Crocker Range to Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From here the highest peak in Malaysia and all of Southeast Asia rises above to a majestical 4095 metres above sea level. From the gate the trail ascends through the old growth forest, surrounded by orchid and moss covered trees. The plant life changes as you continue to climb until you reach the tree line at around 3350 metres. You will reach the guesthouse in the early afternoon and can spend the rest of the day resting up for tomorrows early start or exploring the area and taking in the incredible views over Borneo.
Start trekking by torchlight at around 2am this morning as you head for the summit, there are ropes, rails and ladders on the steeper sections to assist you as you reach the highest point at Lows Peak where you can enjoy the magnificent spectacle of the sun rising. On a clear day you can see Kota Kinabalu City and the islands beyond that dot the South China Sea all the way to the neighbouring Philippines.
